About the event

A rare opportunity to immerse yourself in the process and nature of design. To what extent is design thinking helpful in addressing some of the complex challenges we face as stewards of our environment and ultimately, of planet Earth? How is design thinking mediated through the constraints of politics and place? Behind the Scenes with Emeritus Professor Alec Tzannes AM.

Our next ComplexitySalon - 39 Martin Place will kick off on the rooftop of Macquarie Bank at 50 Martin Place, a space not generally open to the public. We are grateful to Nicholas Moore AO, former CEO of Macquarie Group (2008–2018), for generously hosting us for the morning. From there, we will view and appreciate 39 Martin Place, the Metro precinct designed by Emeritus Professor Alec Tzannes AM, who will tell the story behind its design. Nicholas has also accepted our invitation to share some of his own memories and thoughts and to join the Q&A.

WHY THIS BUILDING, AND WHY ALEC? 39 Martin Place has transformed Martin Place and the daily commute. One can't help but appreciate its elegance, and one can't help but be drawn inside. Unlike more self-referential architecture, Alec's design shows deep attentiveness and respect for the neighbouring buildings, the environmental conditions, the particularities of the site and the broader context in which the architecture must exist.Alec will illustrate that making things happen turns on decision-makers as well as designers. A thoughtful design process is never free of politics. Experience shows that pushing back against existing conditions of 'control' takes a shared commitment to build for the greater good and for future generations. Sometimes history forgets those who took a position.

WHO SHOULD COME. We hope to bring together university design faculties and their most talented students, young leaders from across fields, and those who shape our cities, including local councils, community members and city planners.

EXPRESS YOUR INTEREST. As with our Oxford event, places are limited and tickets will be sold. Please register your EOI on our website (link in the first comment). We invite you to tell us why you would like to take part and how you think you could help contribute to our conversation.WHAT'S NEXT. This is a full-day event. Alec's presentation will be followed by further discussion and reflection.

WHERE PROCEEDS GO. A note on costs: ComplexitySalon is a not-for-profit. The founders have underwritten all costs to date. Any proceeds, after expenses, will go back to the community. As this Salon is about recognising design for future generations and sustainability, we feel giving a bursary to an existing design award may be more in keeping with its spirit. If you have a suggestion for an award, please write to us through the website.

Acknowledgement of Country
We meet from many places, each with its own deep histories of belonging and custodianship. In the spirit of reflexive practice, we acknowledge that the lands we occupy carry obligations we are still learning to understand. In Australia, this begins with recognising the Traditional Custodians of unceded Country and paying respect to Elders past, present and emerging.
